Eyes are an important part of your health. As a caregiver, there are several things you can do to ensure your loved one is seeing at his or her best.

Protecting your loved ones eyes begins with the food you put on their plate. A diet rich in broccoli, carrots and spinach is high in carotenoids and antioxidants. These nutrients can help in maintaining good eye health.

If you or your loved one are smokers, you should quit as soon as possible. Smoking is as bad for your eyes as it is the rest of your body. Research shows an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, which can affect your vision.

Protect your eyes from excessive sun exposure by wearing sunglasses. When shopping for glasses, choose ones that block 99-100 percent of UVA and UVB.

It is important to know your family’s eye health history. These tips can help almost everyone maintain healthy eyes as they age. If you or your loved one have eye concerns, please consult with your primary care physician.
