Self-Care

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter once said: “There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers; those who are currently caregivers; those who will be caregivers; and those who will need caregivers.” One way or another, caregiving will touch all of our lives, and if you find yourself as a primary caregiver for a loved one, self care and respite relief are critical for your wellbeing.

Be aware of the seven signs that it’s time to recharge yourself:

  1. Changes in eating habits: weight loss or gain,

  2. Lack of energy,

  3. Overwhelming fatigue,

  4. Anxiety about the future,

  5. Becoming unusually impatient, irritable, or argumentative with the person your caring for,

  6. Headaches, stomachaches, or other physical problems,

  7. Depression or mood swings.

If you are a caregiver and recognize any of these signs in yourself, please seek help and take time to care for yourself.
